Do you think LA’s lack of reliable public transportation forces us to drive drunk?

Forces? No. Encourages? Yes.

Since I’ve left LA, many things have improved. Taxis are easier to find and hail, Uber has made inroads, my friends are more willing to walk relatively short distances to and from bars, and are more likely to offer a couch or guestroom for sleeping off drunkenness, and the quality of local booze spots has gone up dramatically.

However, there are still nights I’ve driven from the Westside all the way to the Tiki Ti or Verdugo or wherever and then had to decide between taking a dumb risk and driving home or coughing up a giant sum for a cab, knowing I’ll have to repeat the expenditure in the morning, and will likely find a parking ticket waiting for me as well.

At that point in the evening, if I wasn’t ALREADY braying about how much better New York is for drinking, I usually start in earnest.

I used to go to the shooting range a fair amount when I lived in LA. I have a good friend who owns several guns (one of which, an AR-15, you can see me broishly brandishing in the photo above), and we’d often hit the LAX Firing Range to blow off some steam and inhale some cordite. It was fun, as were the post-range 2nd amendment arguments where I’d blithely announce that, while I enjoy squeezing off a few rounds every few months, I would have no problem with guns being outlawed tomorrow.

It’s a lot harder to find a range in New York, I’ve had a vague plan to go shooting with some bar buddies for about a year now, but the schlep required plus the boring nature of the weapons offered for rental (compared to LA or, say, Vegas, where you can rent a SAW and fire it at a picture of Bin Laden after about 10 seconds of paperwork), has dampened the enthusiasm somewhat, thus, despite the talk, we’ve never gone.

But that dampened enthusiasm is nothing compared to what I feel like these days. I’m sick of guns. Sick of the fantasies their supporters entertain, where society breaks down and packs of looters and rapists roam free and they alone stand armed to protect the innocent and helpless, sick even of my AR-15 toting buddy’s flippant references to the zombie apocalypse, around which most of his gun accumulation and accessorizing seems to revolve.

So, 1st thing: no more recreational shooting for me. It just seems gross now, I’m happy to forego whatever guilty fun I used to glean from it and use that time instead for tedious civil liberties conversations with my friends if it will help me sleep better at night. Plus, that’s $300-$400 a year that Remington won’t get from me, which hopefully means slightly less money for the NRA.

Also, I’m just going to put this down here so there’s no confusion: I think the individual right to bear arms is antiquated and dumb. If you want to go after wild animals with single shot hunting rifles, you should be checked, tested, and certified with at least as much intensity as if you were trying to get a motorcycle license. In my perfect world, being licensed to buy a gun would be as onerous as getting licensed to fly a private plane.

If this is in conflict with the 2nd amendment (and I’m not so sure it is, by the way, the current interpretation of ‘well regulated militia’ and ‘individuals right to keep and bear arms’ is a fairly recent development), then the 2nd amendment needs to change. It is, after all, an amendment, this shit is not written in stone.

This may be unrealistic, but way too many people are being killed by guns in this country, and the arguments against gun control are silly, and it’s time for all of that to stop. I think a great first step in that journey is tackling the idea that an armed populace is something we just have to live with.

Politicians can argue over expanded background checks and smaller capacity magazines and silencers and other minutiae, but I want to go on record with the opinion that guns have no place in a civilized society, and I’m entirely cool with them disappearing completely.
